Type a question into Google today and, more often than not, the first thing you see is not a list of websites. It is a neatly written answer, generated by Google’s own AI, sitting above every organic result on the page. That block is called an AI Overview, and it has quietly changed the rules of search for every business in the UK.
If you run a company website, this matters more than any algorithm update of the past decade. Ranking first on Google used to be the finish line. Now, a page can hold the top organic position and still lose more than half of its clicks to a summary that answers the visitor’s question before they ever scroll down.
In this article we explain what AI Overviews are, why they should be on your radar, where they fall short, and – most importantly – what you can do to make sure your website is one of the sources Google chooses to cite.
What Are AI Overviews?
AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that Google places at the very top of its search results for a large proportion of queries. Rather than simply pointing users to ten blue links, Google reads across a number of web pages, synthesises the information and presents a direct answer – typically a few paragraphs, sometimes with bullet points, tables or product suggestions – along with a small set of links to the sources it drew upon.
The feature is powered by Google’s Gemini models and began its rollout in the United States in 2024 before expanding to the UK and, subsequently, to more than 200 countries and territories. It sits alongside AI Mode, Google’s more conversational search experience, which lets users ask follow-up questions in a chat-like interface.
A few key characteristics are worth understanding:
- AI Overviews are query-dependent. They do not appear on every search. They are most common for informational and “how do I” questions, though they are steadily spreading into commercial, comparison and even shopping-related searches.
- They cite sources. Every overview links to a handful of pages that informed the answer. Those citations are the new prime real estate on the results page.
- They change frequently. The pages Google cites are far more volatile than traditional rankings. Research has found that the majority of cited sources change within a matter of months, often without any corresponding change in organic position.
- They are not the same as featured snippets.A featured snippet lifts an extract from a single page. An AI Overview blends multiple sources into new text that did not previously exist anywhere online.
Why AI Overviews Matter for Your Business
They are now the most visible element on the page
Depending on which tracking study you read, AI Overviews appear on anywhere from around 20% to almost half of Google searches, and coverage has expanded sharply year on year. In sectors such as health, education and professional services, the proportion is far higher. Whatever the exact figure for your industry, a large share of your potential customers are now seeing an AI-written answer before they see your website.
They are eroding organic clicks
The evidence is consistent across every major study. Ahrefs, analysing Search Console data for hundreds of thousands of keywords, found that click-through rate for the first organic position falls by more than half when an AI Overview is present. Seer Interactive recorded organic CTR dropping by roughly 60% on affected queries. A randomised field experiment published in 2026 – the first genuinely causal evidence – measured a drop in outbound clicks approaching 40%.
Closer to home, UK publishers have told the Competition and Markets Authority about declines of 40–60% on affected searches, with worst-case examples approaching 90% for individual news stories. Small and medium-sized businesses are not immune; they simply have fewer analysts on hand to notice.
Being cited is the new “ranking first”
Here is the flip side. Brands that are cited inside an AI Overview earn significantly more clicks per impression than brands on the same results page that are not. Seer Interactive’s 2026 analysis put the advantage at well over 100%. A citation also lends a powerful form of implied endorsement: Google is effectively telling the searcher that your page is one of the trusted sources behind its answer.
In short, the traffic pool is smaller, but it is far more concentrated. The businesses that adapt will take a larger share of a shrinking pie; those that do not will watch their organic performance decline while their rankings look, on paper, perfectly healthy.
Regulation is shaping the landscape
In June 2026 the CMA became the first regulator in the world to require Google to let publishers opt out of AI Overviews and AI Mode without losing normal search visibility. This is a developing area, and it signals that the way AI features use web content will continue to be scrutinised in the UK. For most businesses, however, opting out is not the answer – being featured is.
The Drawbacks of AI Overviews
It would be easy to write an article that treats AI Overviews as an unstoppable force to be embraced without question. A more honest assessment includes their limitations.
- Accuracy is not guaranteed. AI Overviews have, on several well-documented occasions, presented incorrect or even absurd information as fact. Google has improved the system considerably, but the underlying models still make mistakes, particularly on niche topics or where the source material is contradictory. If Google summarises your industry inaccurately, potential customers may arrive with the wrong expectations – or not arrive at all.
- The “zero-click” problem. When the answer is on the results page, many users simply do not click anywhere. Studies of search behaviour in early 2026 put the share of searches ending without a click at well over half. For businesses whose content is genuinely useful, this can feel like providing free labour to Google.
- Volatility. Because cited sources rotate so frequently, visibility in AI Overviews can be difficult to hold on to. A page that is cited this month may be dropped next month with no obvious cause. Traditional rankings, for all their fluctuations, are comparatively stable.
- Reduced control over your message. When Google rewrites your content into its own words, nuance can be lost. A carefully worded explanation of a service, a legal caveat or a pricing condition may be flattened into a single sentence that no longer reflects what you actually offer.
- Measurement is harder. Impressions may remain steady or even rise while clicks fall, which can mask the real impact in your reports. Businesses that only monitor rankings will not see the problem until revenue is affected.
None of these drawbacks change the fundamental reality: AI Overviews are here, they are expanding, and your competitors are already working out how to appear in them.
How to Optimise Your Website for AI Overviews
The good news is that there is no secret trick. AI Overviews reward the same qualities that good SEO has always rewarded – clarity, authority and genuine usefulness – but they reward them more sharply. Here is what actually moves the needle.
1. Answer the question directly, and early
Google’s models look for content that resolves a query cleanly. Open each important section with a concise, self-contained answer of two or three sentences, then expand with detail. Long preambles, teasing introductions and “read on to find out” copy work against you.
2. Structure content so a machine can read it
Use clear, descriptive headings that mirror the questions people actually ask. Break complex information into lists, tables and short paragraphs. Where relevant, include a dedicated FAQ section. Well-structured pages are easier for Google to extract from, and they are easier for humans to read, which improves engagement signals too.
3. Build genuine topical authority
AI Overviews favour sources that demonstrate depth on a subject rather than a single page targeting a single keyword. Cover your core topics comprehensively across a cluster of related, internally linked pages. If you are a Norfolk roofing firm, for example, you want to be the site that explains every aspect of roofing in the region, not just the one with a page titled “roofer near me”.
4. Demonstrate first-hand expertise and trust
Google’s quality guidelines place heavy emphasis on experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness. Show who wrote the content and why they are qualified. Include original data, case studies, photographs of your own work and specific detail that a generic article could not replicate. AI-generated filler content is precisely the kind of material that gets overlooked.
5. Implement structured data
Schema markup – for organisations, products, services, FAQs, reviews and how-to content – gives Google an unambiguous description of what your page contains. It is not a guarantee of inclusion, but it removes ambiguity, and ambiguity is the enemy of citation.
6. Keep content current
AI Overviews show a clear preference for recently updated material, especially on topics where information changes. Audit your key pages regularly, refresh statistics, update dates and remove anything that is no longer accurate.
7. Get the technical foundations right
Fast loading times, mobile-first design, clean crawlability and a logical site architecture all matter. Around four in five AI Overview interactions happen on mobile devices, so a site that performs poorly on a phone is at an immediate disadvantage.
8. Strengthen your brand beyond your own website
Google’s AI draws on the wider web, including review platforms, industry directories, YouTube and community sites. Consistent, positive mentions of your brand across these sources reinforce the signals that make you a credible candidate for citation.
9. Track the right metrics
Stop measuring success by rankings alone. Monitor click-through rate by query in Search Console, track which of your pages are being cited in AI Overviews, and watch conversions rather than raw traffic. A smaller number of highly qualified visitors is often more valuable than a larger volume of casual browsers.
10. Protect your local visibility
Local and “near me” searches remain comparatively insulated from AI Overviews, because Google still relies heavily on Business Profile data and map results for these queries. An optimised Google Business Profile, accurate citations and a steady flow of genuine reviews are as important as ever.
Adapting to AI Overviews with Top Results Agency
AI Overviews are not a passing experiment. They represent a permanent shift in how Google presents information, and the businesses that thrive will be those that treat being cited as a primary objective rather than an afterthought.
At Top Results Agency, we have been helping UK companies win organic visibility for years, and we have spent the last two years refining our approach specifically for the AI-driven results page. That means:
- A full audit of where your site currently stands – which of your queries trigger AI Overviews, whether you are being cited, and where you are losing clicks.
- Content built for citation – clearly structured, expert-led pages that answer real customer questions and demonstrate the authority Google’s models look for.
- Technical SEO done properly – structured data, site speed, mobile performance and crawlability, all handled by specialists rather than templates.
- Transparent reporting that tracks the metrics that actually matter to your business, so you can see exactly what is working and where your budget is going, to the nearest penny.
